CHARLES REXFORD HUGHES
Charles Rexford Hughes, son of William Hughes and Sarah Sowers Hughes, was born March 25, 1880 on a farm just one mile south of the Pleasant Grove Church. Here he grew to manhood, attending the red school house that stood in the lot east of the church. He was part of the religious and social life that centered around the church and school. With other boys of the neighborhood he found recreation in the woods and at the mill pond. Here he developed his love of the timber and streams which he passed on as a heritage to his children.
In 1901 the family moved to a farm west of Kelley. Here he met and on October 5, 1904 married Minnie Toll. To this union were born five children. He moved with his bride to Minnesota. After three years he returned to Iowa where he continued to farm in Boone and Story counties for the remainder of his life. It was a matter of pride to him that he was able to help with the crops after his eightieth birthday.
His interest in the Pleasant Grove Church and Cemetery has been lifelong. He was a faithful attendant and active in the affairs of church whenever services were held. He was laid to rest in the cemetery beside his wife. Here also rest his grandfather, father, son and grandson.
He died at the home of his daughter September 4, 1962 at the age of 82 years 5 months and 10 days.
He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter and her husband, Marie and Pat Nolan, Story City; one son and his wife, Kenneth and Mabel Hughes, Story City; one daughter-in-law, Edna Hughes, Nevada; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Grace Carroll, Kelley.
He was preceded in death by twin sons who died in infancy, his wife, Minnie and his son Rexford.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 6 at the Pleasant Grove Church at 2 p. m., the Rev. C. L. Fuller officiating.
Pallbearers were: Parker Stone, Harold Matters, Harold Dyer, Silas Thompson, Vere Bielfeldt, and Ferrel Safly.
