THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, November 17, 2009.

Charles Edward Litchfield, 76, of Ames, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at Story Memorial Gardens in Ames.

Charles Litchfield was born Feb. 18, 1933, in Centerville, in Appanoose County, to Archie Edward and Pearl Catherine (Brown) Litchfield. He lived most of his life in Ames, attended Ames Public Schools and graduated from Ames High School in 1952. On Feb. 21, 1953, he married Janis McKim in Nevada. To this union were born three sons and one daughter.

He was employed by Iowa State University Grounds Shop and was a grounds man for more than 40 years. He had a passion for being outdoors, which included mowing, trimming and a zest for gardening vegetables and flowers.

He was a very loving father to his children and was always there to lend his ear to anyone who stopped by his home for a Pepsi or a cup of coffee. He was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, and he spent many good times watching and listening to his beloved Cubs teams throughout the years.

He is survived by three sons, Mark (Pam) Litchfield, of Huxley, Ken (Sharon) Litchfield, of Boise, Idaho, and Dave (Donna) Litchfield, of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Diane Litchfield, of Ames; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Hubert) Bowers, of Berryville, Ark.; one brother, Roger (Paula) Litchfield, of Ames; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ames Animal Shelter or Israel Family Hospice House.
