Marilyn Nelson, 75, of McCallsburg, Iowa passed away on Oct. 28, 2009 at home, surrounded by family. Marilyn was born Oct. 2, 1934 in McCallsburg, a twin daughter of Sanford and Emma Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in McCallsburg and was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Marilyn graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1952, where she was a standout basketball player.
Marilyn was united in marriage to Vern Nelson on Dec. 5, 1953 at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. To this union four children were born, Kim, Gayle, Dannie and Pamela.
Marilyn and Vern formed Nelson Home Improvement. She was a very important part of this business, painting and doing the re-finish work in several of newly built and re-modeled homes. She also did all of the bookwork for the business.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, McCallsburg American Legion Auxiliary and served as President of the McCallsburg Alumni Banquet for the last 17 years. Marilyn had also taught Sunday school. In 2001, Marilyn and Vern were presented with the Unsung Hero award by the Ames Noon Rotary and the Tribune. Her interests included family and she enjoyed working outside in her yard and garden.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Vern and three children, Kim (Kathy) Nelson, Gayle (Larry) Springer, Pam (Mark) Hendrick, and daughter-in-law Lisa Nelson, all of McCallsburg. Marilyn loved her eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by 2 sisters, Loretta (Don) Hornung and Raylene (Tom) Tisdale; 2 brothers Stanley (Joyce) Thompson and Terry (Shirley) Thompson; brother-in-law Bob (Bobolene) Nelson and sister-in-law Mary Engelking; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Marcia, sister Jolaine, brother Sterling, son Dannie and granddaughter Katie.
Services were held Monday, Nov. 2, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Burial followed in the Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg. Fredregill Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
