THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
Elizabeth Hoyle White, 83, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at her home in Timberland Village, Story City, following a brief battle with cancer and a more lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. A private family memorial service will be at a later date in Florida.
Elizabeth was born July 8, 1926, to Wilhelmina (Minnie) and William (Bill) Dunlop, in Oak Park, Ill. Her parents emigrated from Scotland following World War I, and settled in the Chicago suburban area. She graduated from Oak Park High School before marrying the “love of her life,” Charles F. (Skipper) White, in Jacksonville, Fla., on July 27, 1944, while he was stationed at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. She enjoyed being a wife and mother.
She and Charles lived most of their married life in Oak Park or Lombard, Ill. After retirement, they lived in Ames; Bradenton, Fla.; Anderson, S.C.; and again in Bradenton, Fla. She moved to Timberland Village in 2002. She loved her “Skipper” and spending time with family. She was fiercely proud of Chicago, all things Scottish, the U.S. Navy, and each of the Collie dogs her family owned over the years. She was known for her undeniably unique personality and propensity to “speak her mind.” She has been referred to by many individuals as “one of a kind.”
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Bill) Peaslee, of Lakeland, Fla.; one son, Scott (Pam) White, of Ames; one grandson, David (Barbara) Griffith, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one granddaughter, Kristin (Jason) Sjulin, of Ames; one great-grandson, Matthew Griffith, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Katherine Griffith, of St. Petersburg, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one granddaughter, Amy Griffith.
