THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
Marie I. Mumby, 81, of Ames, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, surrounded by her loving family. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
Marie was born May 5, 1928, in El Rito, N.M. She attended New Mexico Normal School. She was employed as a legal secretary at the Pueblo Ordinance Depot in Pueblo, Colo., when she met her future husband, who was serving in the military at Camp Carson, Colo. She and Ronald Mumby were married Sept. 19, 1953, in the Catholic church in King City, Calif., while Ronald served at Hunter Liggett Army base.
She graduated from Iowa State University in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in education and social sciences. She was employed at ISU as a minority students counselor and retired from that position in the mid 1990s.
She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 817 in Boone. She enjoyed relaxing on her porch and observing the antics of the birds, squirrels, rabbits and other neighborhood wildlife.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Mumby, of Ames; one son, Edward Mumby, of Lake Geneva, Wis.; one grandson, Bradley Mumby, of San Diego; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; one sister; and her grandmother, Juanita Martinez, who raised her following the deaths of her parents.
A memorial fund will be established at a later date.
