THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 4, 2009.

Ken Roe, 84, of rural Ames, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Napier United Methodist Church. Burial will be at a later date.

Ken was born July 30, 1924, near Williams, to Ole and Mary (Maisland) Roe. He grew up in the Williams, Ellsworth and Radcliffe areas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Japan and the Philippines. On Sept. 12, 1949, he married Ann Bennett in Ames. They lived in Napier.

He was a custodian and bus driver for the Napier School and later United Community School District, retiring in 1974. He also was a taxidermist for 35 years and was known throughout Iowa as one of the few full-time taxidermists in the state.

He was an avid duck hunter and fisherman. He also raised roller pigeons and was a member of the National Birmingham Roller Pigeon Club. He also helped establish and maintain purple martin colonies throughout central Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife in December 2008; his parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by one son, David (Susan), of Ames; one daughter, Sue Roe, of Marshalltown; one granddaughter, Mary Huntrods, of Marshalltown; three sisters-in-law, Doris Lauer, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Joan Broer, of Aberdeen, S.D., and Sandy Bennett, of Boone; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund is being established and memorials may be directed to the family.
