NEVADA - A Nevada youth, Craig L. Stemler, 16, was found shot in the head at his home at 705 7th Street late Saturday. He was rushed to the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where he was pronounced dead on arrival early Sunday morning.
Polk County medical examiner, Dr. R. C. Wooters, ruled the death a suicide.
Stemler was a sophomore at Nevada High School where he was active in the band, swing band and choir. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada.
Born December 5, 1958 in Nevada, to LeRoy and Marlene, he had lived here his entire life. He was employed at the Fareway store.
Private funeral services for Stemler will be held from the Ryan Funeral Home Tuesday, April 29 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Marvin L. Hulse will officiate and burial will be in the Evergreen Memory Gardens.
Stemler is survived by his parents; two sisters; Mrs. Gail L. Willson of Ankeny and Linda Stemler of Ames; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Hugh Craig of Roland; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lizzie Stemler of Nevada; and his paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Lora Caldwell of Des Moines.
