Alyce Elizabeth Stratton passed away at the Madrid Home on January 5, 2009, after a short battle with lung cancer.
Alyce was born on July 6, 1931, in Lewis, Iowa to Jake and Helen (Osterholm) Riekena. She graduated from Maxwell High School in 1948 and then attended AIB in Des Moines. On October 12, 1948, she married fellow classmate, Paul Stratton. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
In 1951, she began work as a secretary for her father, who was the school superintendent. She remained there for a total of over 40 years, serving four superintendents. In 1964, she worked for a short time at the Story County Courthouse and for Dr. Don Hale, DDS in Nevada.
Alyce was very active in the community. She served as a school board member, and belonged to many organizations. She had served on both the Maxwell Library Board and the Senior Housing Board. She was a 50 year member of the Monday Study Club; was a charter member of both the Maxwell Mothers Club, and GOATS – a grandmothers club. She was Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and was a 63 year member of the Maxwell United Methodist Church. She had served for many years as treasurer of the Woodland Cemetery Association.
Her faith and her church were very important to her. She had served as head of the trustees, was a member of UMW, and served in several other offices and committees. In recent years, she served as secretary and right-hand to Pastor Dean Kelly.
She enjoyed reading, being on the computer, and spending time with family and friends. She was an avid ISU fan. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her ability to make people laugh. Friends remember her always humming.
She is survived by her husband Paul; one son Alan (Barb) Stratton of Maxwell; one daughter, Teresa Stratton of Maxwell. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Audrey Stratton of Nevada and Carl Stratton of Maxwell; a brother, Dr. Ron (Sally) Riekena of Osceola and a sister, Shirley McBride of Maxwell. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Jackie Chittenden.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Maxwell with burial in the Woodland (Iowa Center) Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell.
