Al Swanson
Al Swanson, 68, Gilbert, died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 6, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Gilbert Congregational Church with the Rev. Tom Douglas officiating. Burial will be in Story Memorial Gardens.
Al Swanson was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Woodward to John and Emma (Toll) Swanson. On Feb. 2, 1939, he married Bessie Watts. They made their home in Kelley until 1970 when they moved to Gilbert. He had been employed by the Doughboy Feed Co. in Ontario until his retirement in 1979.
He was a veteran of World War II. Since 1946 he had been active in the Story County Bowlers Association. He was inducted in the Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1967 and was secretary of the Ames Merchants League for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife Bessie; two daughters, Marsha Knutson of Marshalltown and Patricia Barrie of Winterset; four sons, Ronald, Douglas and Keith of Gilbert and Mark of Cambridge; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a brother, Raymond Swanson of Ames; and four sisters, Carol Swanson of Kelley, Fern DeLong of Madrid, Glenda Adams of Waterloo, and Hazel Downs of Kelley.
He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and an infant daughter.
Visitation will be tonight at Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home, Story City. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m.---frin the Ames Tribune Dec. 8, 1986
