Alice Jeanette Hitchings, 100, of Zearing, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Israel Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing, with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing.
Alice was born Feb. 28, 1908, in Marshalltown, to Charles and Gertrude (Santee) Chinn. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1926. She grew up in the Methodist Church.
She married Marion R. (Monk) Hitchings on May 20, 1934, in Nevada. They were married 53 years. In 1942, they moved from Fernald to Zearing. From 1957 to 1973, she was the secretary to the superintendent and school board at the Zearing and later the NESCO school district. She was an honorary member of the Sorosis Club of Zearing. She had been a resident of Colonial Manor in Zearing since February 2001.
She is survived by one daughter, Jeanette (Keith) Gibson, of Burlington; and three sons, James, of Emory, Texas, Charles (Charlotte), of La Porte City, and Marvin (Nora), of Ames. She also is survived by 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Fern Chinn, of Marshalltown; and one brother-in-law, Ralph (Bud) Hitchings, of Zearing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion, in 1987; her parents; one son, Kenneth, on Nov. 5, 2008; two brothers, Clifford and Gilbert, and two sisters, Mildred and Josephine.
