Lula (Lou) Beth Wakefield, 81, of Story City and formerly of Gilbert, died Friday, June 20, at Bethany Manor. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Gilbert Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Thomas Prochnow officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, June 23, at Bethany Manor in Story City and from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gilbert Lutheran Church.
Lula (Lou) Beth Wakefield was born April 20, 1927, to Vaughn and Nannie (Hill) Thompson. She went to school in Hampton. She married Guy Wakefield Jr., Jan. 20, 1945, at Pleasant Grove Church east of Gilbert.
She helped with the farming, was a baker at North Ames Fruit and Grocery, worked at Iowa State University and was a cook at the Gilbert school. In 1942, she was the Jitter Bug Queen in Hampton. She enjoyed crocheting, collecting glass dishes and candy making. In the summer, Lou and Jr. sat in their lawn chairs and kept an eye on School Street in Gilbert. She was known for the best cinnamon rolls around. She was an avid Cubs fan. She will be missed by many.
She is survived by two sons, Larry, of Belle Fourche, S.D., and Bill (Paula), of Roland; two daughters, Linda Eaches of Hayfork, Calif., and Ann (Marv) Vanloh of Gilbert; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dick Thompson of Mesa, Ariz., and Bill Thompson, of Ames; and three sisters, Ruby Luttman of Rockwell, Ruth Hennick of Huxley, and Margaret Kuhns of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband in April 2006.
Memorials may be made to Gilbert Fire Department.
Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
