Word came from Kelley last Thursday that Henry Toll, long-time resident of that community, had passed away. He had not been well for some time, but it was only recently that his condition became serious.
Funeral rites were held Sunday afternoon from the Kelley Congregational church. There were brief services from the home of a sister with whom he had been living. The Rev. Floyd Newbrough of Van Meter was in charge.
Services at the church opened with a vocal number, "Jesus, Savior, Pilot me," sung by Miss Mae Ford, after which the pastor led the audience in prayer and scripture reading. His sermon followed. In closing Miss Ford sang "The Old Rugged Cross." There were many lovely flowers, silent tributes to one who was beloved by many.
Pallbearers were Walter Downs, Everett Swanson, Albert Swanson, Raymond Swanson, Mark Burr and Walter Swanson. Burial was at Dallas Center.
Henry John Toll was born Aug. 5, 1875 in Baltimore, Md., and died Feb. 3, 1949 at his home in Kelley at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 28 days. While still a baby he moved with his parents to Pennsylvania. At the age of 8 years they moved to Iowa and settled in the Dallas Center community. Later they moved to a farm near Kelley. In 1922 he moved into Kelley and began working for the Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern railway and was employed by this firm until his retirement three years ago. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows lodge from its beginning in that community.
He is survived by one sister, Mr. Emma Jane Swanson of Kelley, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. His parents, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
