Gloria Ruth Thacker, 70, of Boone and Highland Haven, Texas, died Dec. 27, in Austin, Texas, with her beloved husband and three children by her side. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday Jan. 4, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery, southeast of Huxley.

Gloria was born Nov. 10, 1937, in Newport, R.I., to Fay and Myrtle (Johnson) Reitz. She married Stanley Thacker Dec. 19, 1959, in Boone.

She was a secretary at Iowa State University in the athletic department and the accounts receivable department for many years and later moved with her husband to Raleigh, N.C., where she worked as a secretary at North Carolina State University until she retired in 1996, at which time the couple moved back to Boone.

They raised three beautiful children and spent many years camping, square dancing and spending winters in their home on Lake LBJ in Texas in her later years.

She is survived by her loving husband, Stanley; their children, Ben Thacker and his wife, Kim, of San Antonio, Stuart Thacker and his wife, Ann, of Aberdeen, Md., and Dawn Smith and her husband, Tom, of Boone; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fay Reitz Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Camdenton, Mo., and Gary Reitz and his wife, Chris, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; one sister-in-law Ruby Thacker, of Huxley; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Visitation continues from 9:30 a.m. to time of service Friday at the church.
