Melvin Engstrom, 98, of Story City, died Friday, Dec. 28, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services are pending with Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Melvin Engstrom, 98, died Friday, Dec. 28, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in South Marion Cemetery in rural Stratford.
Melvin Engstrom was born Feb. 19, 1909, in Texas, to John and Nellie (Berglund) Engstrom. After a short stay in Texas, they moved back to the Stratford area where he attended country school. On Feb. 10, 1932, he married Arlene Erickson, of Stratford. He was a farmer, seed corn salesman and bus driver.
He is survived by one son Dewey (Cindy) Engstrom, of LaFeria, Tex.; one daughter, Doris (Les) Mathre, of Story City; one daughter-in-law, Joye Engstrom, of Ankeny; grandchildren Dan Engstrom, of Story City, Cindy O'Brien, of Ankeny, Jennifer Friedmeyer, of Ankeny, Denny Krumm, of rural Boone, and Karol Krumm, of Boone. He also is survived by nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grand children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene; one brother, Oscar Engstrom; one sister, Ethel Schlachter; one son-in-law, Hurley Krumm; and one step-grandson, Troy Jacobson.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Petri Lutheran Church, Cedar Place, or Senior Citizen Center, all of Story City.
