THE STORY CITY HERALD, Story City, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, April 5, 2006.
Marjorie Arlene Boyles was born July 16, 1922 to Clara and Andrew Abrahamson in Ames.
She was raised on a farm near Story City with her parents and two younger sisters, Eleanor and Kay. Her father was a farmer and the local blacksmith and her mother was an excellent cook, seamstress and homemaker.
Marjorie attended a one room country school through the eighth grade. During her high school years she moved from the farm to live with a family in Story City and then attended A.I.B. Business School in Des Moines, graduating in 1940.
Marjorie and Charles Boyles were introduced by his sister who was Marjorie's roommate in Business School. They were married in Omaha, Nebraska on Feb. 7, 1942. Their first child, Beth, was born in 1942. During WWII Charles served throughout North Africa and Europe before returning home in 1945. During the war years Marjorie and Beth lived with the Boyles and Abrahamson grandparents.
In 1946 a second daughter, Ann, was born. The family lived in Ames and Wall Lake, Iowa, Fremont and Omaha, Nebraska, and Wheaton, Illinois during Charles' career with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. They retired to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1978.
Marjorie was a kind and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her generous, easy going manner was a gift to all fortunate to know her. She was a bank teller, secretary, scout leader, active church volunteer, gardener, and homemaker. In Sioux Falls she hosted a weekly needlepoint group in her home for over 15 years.
Marjorie and Charlie cherished lifelong relationships and often visited extended family and friends throughout the country. When Marjorie and six of her girl friends left high school, they organized a Round Robin letter writing group. Though they settled all around the country, the girls faithfully shared their children, life experiences and exceptional friendship in their letters for over 65 years.
Marjorie and Charlie shared a loving and supportive 64 years together. Grateful for having shared her life are–her-husband Charles, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Beth McVicker and her husband Jerry of Payson, Arizona; daughter, Ann Hanson and her husband Robert of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Davis Hanson, Andrew Hanson, Emily Erfman and her husband Matt of Sioux Falls; Lisa Jenny and her husband Ralph of El Paso, Texas; Laura McCormack and her husband John of Aztec, New Mexico; and great-grandchildren Joshua, Ashley and Kristin Jenny; Johnny, Sawyer and Anun McCormack; brother-in-law, Sterling Anderson of Eagle Grove, Iowa; sister Kay Mills Poplin and her husband Bob of Richland, Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
