Arnold Skartvedt City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at Stavanger Lutheran Church in Garden City. Burial was at Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery in Garden City.

Visitation was at Bethany Manor in Story City on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 from 5:00 to 7:00 p,m. Family was present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Arnold Sanford Skartvedt was born Sept. 9, 1912, the first born child of Silas and Anna (Thorson) Skartvedt, on a farm north of Garden City, Iowa. He was raised on the Skartvedt farm northeast of Garden City.

He was baptized and confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church where he remained a lifelong member.

Arnold attended school in Garden City and the rural Concord Township School. He finished the eighth grade and then helped his father with farming. He later farmed and then purchased his Thorson grandparent's farm where he raised his family.

In March of 1939, Arnold married Arlotte Pearson. To this union two sons were born, David and Ivan. Arlotte passed away May 25, 1943.

On May 27, 1944, Arnold married Helen (Lindebak) Frette. Arnold became father to Glenn and Wendel. To this union Lyle and Jean were born. Together, Arnold and Helen raised their family of six children with unconditional love.

Arnold loved to farm, remaining active and raising 70 crops. He also loved to work with horses and baseball. He served on the Garden City Creamery Board, the Coop board and was a trustee for Stavanger Lutheran Church. He and Helen spent their last years at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Arnold passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 25, 2007, at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Arnold is survived by his children David Skartvedt and wife Mary of Riverside, California, Wendell Frette and wife Lois of Jewell, Iowa, Ivan Skartvedt and wife Barbara of Conrad, Iowa, Lyle Skartvedt and wife Pam of Garden City, Iowa, and Jean Engelson and husband Larry of Garden City, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; along with other family and friends.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Arlotte and Helen: son Glenn and daughter-in-law Joan; his siblings Sylvia, Rose Hausman, Ralph, Lillian Guard, Verner, Murrel, and Mayo; a great-grandson, Kole Skartvedt and a great-granddaughter Monica Casas.
