COLLINS GAZETTE Apr 1955Laura Marilla Finnie, daughter of George S. and Martha Ellen Finnie, was born in Indian Creek township, Story county, Iowa, June 20, 1872, and departed this life Saturday evening, April 2, 1955, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 13 days.
Her early childhood was spent in the Maxwell community, moving to the Collins community with her parents when she was 16 years of age where she lived the rest of her life.
She was united in marriage to George Harrison Holmes at the Presbyterian parsonage in Maxwell on Dec. 1, 1895. They established their home in Collins. To this union one daughter, Mary Ellen, was born, with whom she had made her home since suffering a stroke in June, 1945.
She united with the Presbyterian church in Maxwell when a young girl and placed her membership in the Collins Church of Christ in 1900, where she remained a steadfast and true Christian servant until the time of her passing.
She leaves to mourn her sudden passing the daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Kenneth Tomlinson; one granddaughter, Mrs. James A. Moeller of Corpus Christi, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. W. H. Nibel of Des Moines; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, two brothers and her husband, who departed this life May 9, 1950.
The deceased, having lived her entire adult life in this community, will long be remembered as a kind and devoted daughter, sister, wife and mother and a quiet, friendly neighbor and friend who was always ready and willing to do whatever she could to help others.
She will be deeply mourned, not only by those near and dear to her, but by all who knew her.
