Martha Andersen, 87, died Sunday, Oct. 7, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell.
Martha Anna Emelia Ruhnke was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Ray, N.D., to Anna Matilda (Haack) and Emil H. Ruhnke. Her mother died shortly after she was born. She was raised by her aunt, Alvina (Tom) Powers, in Burt. She married Axel T. Andersen Aug. 18, 1940, in Burt. They moved to Jewell in 1955. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell and the Women of Bethesda ladies aide. She enjoyed needlework and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen (Robert) Maegerlein, of Rochester, Minn.; one son, Robert (Peggy) Andersen, of Johnston; eight grandchildren, Jill (Adrian) Manjas, Jeff Maegerlein, Jodie (Scott) Westmont, Danilee Moore, Janet Maegerlein, Caitlin Moore, Kelly Andersen and Grant Andersen; four great-granddaughters, Jennifer Grech, Kristin Maegerlein, Kelly Maegerlein and Sara Westmont; and two sisters, Louise Krause, of Emmetsburg, and Hertha Hale, of Winfield, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Axel, in 1968; one daughter, Virginia (Richard) Moore in 1992; and one brother, Lawrence Ruhnke in 1986.
Martha's family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to her friends and neighbors and to the caring staff at Bethany Manor, especially Chaplain Sandy Anenson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City.
Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Manor in Story City or Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell.
