Irene E. Herrick, 88, formerly of Boone, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone with Richard Harken and Jim Boardman officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Irene E. Herrick was born March 5, 1919, the only daughter of Homer and Cora (Baumgardner) Hawthorne. Her early years were spent in the Hickory Grove area of Boone County, where she went to school. Later, she attended Lincoln School and Boone Junior-Senior High School and worked at Rollins Hosiery Mill in Boone.

She married Raymond Herrick July 22, 1938, in Boone. After her marriage, the couple farmed southwest of Perry, near Dawson in Dallas County, before moving to Boone on the family farm in Jackson Township. The couple farmed until Ray retired from farming. Following his retirement in 1985, the couple moved to Ames. After Ray's death, Irene lived for a few years at Eastern Star Masonic Home, at Prairie Village and most recently was making her home with her daughter, Susan, in West Des Moines.

She was baptized on Jan. 26, 1952. She was a former member of First Baptist Church, serving several years as a deaconess, and at the time of her death was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She had been actively involved with the Boone County Republican Women, serving as committeewoman for Jackson Township. She enjoyed working in her garden. She always could work away her problems in her garden with God. Hobbies were just anything on the farm. She loved farm life and her children. She was a caretaker to anyone who needed help and understanding.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen (Charles) Steimle, of Encinitas, Calif., Susan Wiegand, of West Des Moines, and Marlene (Bill) Hubbard, of Council Bluffs; one son, Robert (Susan) Herrick, of Boone; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Howard Hawthorne and sister-in-law Grace, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray, in June 1996; and four brothers, Oren, Sanford, Melvin and Arthur Hawthorne.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone. Visitation will continue from 8 a.m. until the time of service Saturday, Sept. 22, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
