Longtime Resident of Maxwell Dies at Hospital at Age 77
Charlie Gooden, 77, Maxwell resident for many years, died at the Story County Hospital Sunday morning where he had been a patient for four weeks
Gooden was born in the Peoria neighborhood near Maxwell. His parents died when he was very young and he was adopted by the Goodens who raised him.
Gooden was widely known for his unusual hobby of sand paintings - one of four left in the United States. During his lifetime he had been a carpenter, steam fitter and painter. During World War II he helped build boats in California for Henry Kaiser and also was employed else where in the same capacity.
Survivors are two brothers, Lawrence Morehead of Aberdeen, Ida. and Ray of Maxwell; three nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Maxwell Presbyterian Church with Rev. Floyd Conry officiating. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery near Maxwell. Friends may call at the Cooper Funeral Home until time of services.
