William (Bill) Sellers, 89, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and formerly of Des Moines, died Saturday, June 10. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.

William (Bill) Sellers was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Valley Junction (now West Des Moines), to Morris and Margaret (Carey) Sellers. He attended Valley High School, where he played basketball and football. He entered World War II in 1943 where he served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany and Italy. He received a special commendation from the president for helping to rebuild a bridge in Italy, which helped escalate the end of the war.

In 1940, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Raymond. They had a son and two daughters. He joined the Des Moines Police Force in 1949, retiring in 1973. For 25 years, he was a familiar face as a downtown traffic and motorcycle cop and later retired as a detective. After retiring from the force, he drove a Des Moines public school bus for 10 years.

He and Margaret left Des Moines in 1982, retiring to Alamo, Texas, where he loved woodworking and golf. In 2006, they moved to Fort Walton Beach.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Diane (Denny) Wilson, of Ames, and Linda Ferguson, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla; four grandchildren, Danny Wilson, of Ames, Debi (Louis) Estrada, of Orlando, Fla., Ron (Lisa) Ferguson, of Slidell, La., and Ben (Stephanie) Ferguson, of Hobe Sound, Fla. He had nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; one brother; and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Iowa State Police Association's Rabiner Treatment Center in Fort Dodge.

Adams Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
