Darrell Gene Yocom, 73, of Eagle Rock, Mo., died Friday, June 1, at Cox South Hospice in Springfield, Mo. Members of his family were in attendance. A memorial service was Wednesday, June 6, at Lighthouse Pentacostal in Eagle Rock, with Pastor Jim Clay and Pastor George Clay officiating.
Darrell was born June 8, 1933, in Ames, to Floyd and Ona Yocom. He was a longtime resident of Nevada.
He served as a U.S. Marine with the 1st Div/2nd Reg/Fox Company. He was one of 12 survivors out of more than 1,250 Marines at the frozen Chosin Reservoir in Korea.
He married Ruth Pierce Aug. 6, 1955, in Nevada. He worked as a carpenter for most of his adult life. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He often guided hunters in Colorado and fishermen in Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Eagle Rock, Mo.; three sons, Jerry (Katie), of Black Hawk, Colo., Stephen, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Gary (Lucie), of Sandpoint, Idaho; five grandchildren, Jeff, Brent, Dakota, Anna and Halle; and two brothers, Will, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Max, of Lewellen, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
