Brian Edward Sterbenz passed away surrounded by his family on December 29, 2006 in Casper, WY after a sudden illness.
Brian was born December 3, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Frank and Jan (Taylor) Sterbenz. He grew up and graduated from high school in Nevada, Iowa and received a B.S. Degree in forestry from Iowa State University in 1989.
His first professional forestry jobs were with the U.S. Forest Service in the Leavenworth, WA ranger district. He was a member of the Entiat Hot Shot Fire Crew from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, he moved to Alaska where he continued his forestry career in a number of positions with the Alaska Bureau of Land Management. In 2001, he was named Anchorage District Management Specialist.
An avid outdoorsman, Brian enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and Alaska's abundant wildlife. He loved his prior jobs working as a snow cat driver at Steven's Pass in Washington and at Glacier Snow Cat Skiing in Alaska.
Brian is survived by two children, Shelby and Connor of Clinton, WA; his wife, Terese of Wasilla, AK; his parents, Frank and Jan Sterbenz, of Sheridan, WY; brother Scott Sterbenz and wife, Charmin, of Grimes, IA; sister Christy Filby and husband, Marc, of Wenatchee, WA; 4 nephews; 2 nieces; and a large extended family in the fire community, Missouri and Vermont.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Thomas Ogg officiating. Interment was in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Memorials in memory of Brian may benefit the Brian Sterbenz Memorial Fund, established for the future education of his children, in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
