R. Kevin McKinley, 53, of Roland, died Monday, Jan. 1, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services are pending with Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

April 30, 1953-Jan. 1, 2007Richard Kevin McKinley, 53, of Roland, died Monday, Jan. 1, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Kevin McKinley was born April 30, 1953, in Ames, to Chelsea Wilford and Mary Louise (Williams) McKinley. He graduated from Tech High in Des Moines. Hie served in the Army during the Vietnam War as a military policeman. On Aug. 21, 1976, he married Debra Danelle Shumate in Adel. He retired from the Story County Sheriff's Office as a deputy sheriff. He also was involved in the D.A.R.E. program and was a hostage negotiator. He was a member of the Roland Legion Post No. 307, Mid Iowa Star Chapter 210 Touring and Riding, Pheasants Forever, Loyal Order of the Moose 520, State and National Sheriffs Association.
He is survived by his wife, Debra McKinley, of Roland; three sons, Jeremy (Shanon) McKinley, of Huxley, and Sean McKinley and Eric McKinley, both at home; a daughter, Jessica McKinley of Nevada; two brothers, Mike (Penni) McKinley and Tim (Barb) McKinley, all of Ames; and three grandchildren, Bryon, Dylan and Hunter.
He was preceded in death by Mary McKinley Miller in January 2004 and Chelsea McKinley in June 1966.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada.
A memorial fund has been established.
