Orville Byrd, 93, of Huxley, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Centerville. Arrangements are pending with Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.

Orval Parr Byrd
May 10, 1913-Dec. 5, 2006Orval Parr Byrd, 93, formerly of Huxley, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Golden Age Manor in Centerville. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, with burial in Fjeldberg Cemetery.
Orval Parr Byrd was born May 10, 1913, at Keystone, the son of Orval Pearl and Alberta (Parr) Byrd. He spent his youth in Neola, Perry and Council Bluffs and graduated from Perry High School in 1931.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army March 3, 1941. He graduated from Officer Candidate School and served with the 99th division, 394th regiment. For his service at the Battle of the Bulge in 1945, he received the Bronze Star.
He married Elaine Davis of Council Bluffs Jan. 1, 1944, at Camp Maxey in Paris, Texas. They were blessed with four children, Orval Jr., Lyle, Richard and Marilyn.
Released from the Army in December 1945, he resumed working for the Milwaukee Railroad for 30-plus years, serving stations at Haverhill, Madrid, Woodward, Perry and Huxley. He and Elaine resided in Huxley in a home he built himself for more than 50 years.
He was a member of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, where over the years he served as treasurer, usher and deacon.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elaine; three sons, Orval P. Byrd Jr., of Des Moines, Lyle, currently residing in London, England, and Richard (Elena), of Kapolei, Hawaii; one daughter Marilyn (Gary) Foster, of Centerville; one sister-in-law, Ida Mae Skultety, of Des Moines; one brother-in-law, Fritz Arrowsmith, of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Alberta Byrd; three brothers, Clark, Dorwin and Duane; and two sisters, Dorothy Jane Joyner and Marjorie Arrowsmith.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley.
Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater is in charge of arrangements.
