Ames newspaper. Lyle Haverly, 37, native of Ames, was fatally injured Monday afternoonk, August 18 1941, while working on the construction of a bridge at Denison, Tex. It was reported that Haverly, popularly known as "Fat" was making repairs on a track when a cement car, out of control, struck him. The accident occurred about 2:20 pm and Haverly died about 5:30 pm in a Denison hospital. He sustained injuries to his head and hip and internal injuries. Mr and Mrs Haverly and daughter, Sally, 8, left Ames July 5 for Durant, Okla., across the river from Denison. Haverly was employed by the Union Construction company of Des Moines, which firm has the contract to build a bridge between the two cities. The body will be brought to Ames for funeral services. Mr Haverly was born at Ames March 16, 1904, the son of Mr and Mrs John Haverly, early settlers here. John Haverly was employed by the city for many years before his death five years ago. Lyle was graduated from Ames High School in 1923, and attended Iowa State College for two years. He was employed by the American Steel and Wire company at Chicago for two years, then returned to Ames. He had been employed by Ben Cole and Son, local contractors, for the past seven years before going to the Union concern. He married Agnes Lusk Jan 13, 1932, at Rockford, Ill. Surviving are his widow, daughter Sally; two sisters; Mrs Galen Dodds of Ames and Mrs Roy E Bennett of Milwaukee; his mother Mrs John Haverly, and grandmother, Mrs Nannie Epperson of Ames. Burial will be in the Ames cemetery. Rev A. N. Rogness of the Bethesda Lutheran Church will be in charge of the services.
