Mary Hutchinson Freed
July 10, 1922-Oct. 28, 2006Mary Hutchinson Freed, 84, of Meadow View Memory Care Village in Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 28, at Mercy Medical Center, after a short illness. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with the Rev. Randy Gehring officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Mary Hutchinson Freed was born July 10, 1922, to Ernest and Emma Martin. She married Donald H. Friest in 1943 in Yakima, Wash. He died in 1965. She later married Sherrill P. Freed in 1971 in Ames. He died in 1990.
She worked for the city of Ames and later was an officer at First National Bank of Ames. She was an active member at Bethesda Lutheran Church all of her life. She and Sherrill spent many winters at Palm Gardens in Mesa, Ariz., where she was very active in planning activities for the community. After Sherrill died, she was the founding member of the "Souls and Singles" group for anyone who had lost a spouse or partner. She enjoyed dancing and playing cards with her many friends.
Survivors include one son, Robert (Karen) Friest, of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Janice Hennigar, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one sister, Virginia Diserens; and her son-in-law, James Hennigar.
