Bea Hoekstra, 63, of Ames, lost her battle with cancer on Thursday, Oct. 5. The Rev. Robert De Boer will officiate a graveside service at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, proceeding from the Stevens Memorial Chapel to the Ames Municipal Cemetery. A "Celebration of the Resurrection" service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Ames City Hall Auditorium, 515 Clark Ave. (entrance on Sixth Street), worship site for Bridgeway Church. Attendees are encouraged to wear white or bright colors, and casual dress is welcome. Following the service, a dessert reception will be held at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 Sheldon Ave., in Ames.
Beatrice Helen Minium Hoekstra was born Oct. 12, 1942, in Des Moines, the daughter of Howard Minium and Lily Mae Primus Minium. She was raised in Des Moines and Grand Junction and graduated from East Greene High School. She married James Hoekstra on June 10, 1966. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Central College in Pella. She was a K-12 vocal music teacher, director of church children's choirs and most recently a volunteer chaplain for Mary Greeley Medical Center. She sang alto with the Ames Chamber Artists choral group. She was a partner in Bridgeway Church (RCA) and a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jim, of Ames; two sons, Steve and wife, Anne, of Salina, Kan., and Tim, of Pella; and sisters, Sarah Dimond, of Minot, N.D., and Frances Martin, of Clarinda.
Memorials may be made to the Oncology Unit at Mary Greeley Medical Center, in care of the Stevens Memorial Chapel.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., in Ames, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m.
