Tommy Eugene Van Sickle, 75, went home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, Sept. 4. Tommy ended his battle with heart disease at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines early Labor Day morning. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, at Open Bible Church in Boone where he was a member. The Rev. Phil Waldo will officiate. Graveside services will be in Quincy Cemetery, rural Boone, with the Rev. Ray Block officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

Casket bearers will be Wilbert Gee, Pat Kelly, Drew Kaloupek, Daryl Morain, Junior Stansbury, Jacob Van Sickle, Asher Van Sickle and Bo Young.

Anita Duncan will lead the congregation in singing "Amazing Grace." Dave Freeman will sing "I Can Only Imagine." Anita Duncan will sing "Daddy's Hand's" and "Cry out to Jesus." John Hoffman will be the pianist.

Tommy Eugene Van Sickle was born Sept. 24, 1930, in Lyon County, Kan., to Charlie and Lillian (Randahl) Van Sickle. He attended Emporia Public Schools. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years. He was stationed three years in Quam during the Korean Conflict. When he returned to Emporia, he continued to work in heavy construction. While building Highway 7 through Tama, he met and married Doris Hofer. They were married 49 years. Their union brought forth four children, Thea, Mike, Joy and Matthew. The family also welcomed two foster sisters, Karen Stansbury of Loveland, Colo., and Cindy Phillips of Broken Arrow, Okla.

In 1965, he moved his young family to Ogden to begin his business, Van Sickle Construction, which still is being run by Matthew Van Sickle. He retired 10 years ago but continued to consult and move "dirt" whenever he could. He loved his profession.

He was an avid paint horse enthusiast, a great narrative storyteller, a lover of homemade ice cream and fresh strawberries from his patch. His favorite pastime was attending all his grandchildrens' school and church events. He was most known for his huge giving heart.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Van Sickle, of Boone; his children, Thea and her husband Bo Young, of Kingwood, Texas, Mike and his wife Kim Van Sickle, of Ogden, Joy and her husband Wilbert Gee, of Rochester, Minn., and Matthew and his wife, Tracy Van Sickle, of Boone; 11 grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah, Asher, Jeshua, Micah and John Shai Van Sickle, Caleb, Abby and Mikayla Gee, and Payton and Carson Van Sickle; one sister, Dee Hensley of Americus, Kan.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Carson Funeral Home in Ogden.
