Martha (Wilson) Thompson, 91, a former resident of Villa Del Sol Care Center in Marshalltown, died Sunday, Sept. 3, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown with the Rev. Kevin Gowdy officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Martha Emma Wilson was born March 29, 1915, in Luray, just south of Marshalltown, to George and May (Rubar) Wilson. Martha and her twin sister, Mabel, were number six and seven of nine children. When Martha was five years old, her father died and she moved with her family to Marshalltown. She graduated from the Marshalltown High School in 1933, and went to work for Fisher Controls shortly thereafter.

She married Randall T. Thompson Nov. 17, 1950, at Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church in Marshalltown. They made their home in Marshalltown for the next 56 years. They had one daughter, Randi. Martha became ill in the summer of 2004. That fall, following an extended hospital stay, she moved to the Villa Del Sol Care Center. She became ill and was hospitalized Aug. 11. On Sunday, Sept. 3, she died peacefully at Israel Hospice House in Ames.

She was an active and devoted member of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, which became Grace United Methodist Church, for more than 80 years. She worked for many years at Fisher Controls, leaving her job when her daughter was born, and returning to work off and on over the years as her daughter grew up.

She is survived by one daughter, Randi (Thompson) Peters and husband Steve, of Ames; and five grandchildren, Michelle Peters Tremmel and husband Nick, of Grand Rapids Mich., Katharine Peters and husband Paul Wiedel, of Arden Hill, Minn., Joseph Peters, of New York, N.Y., Lindsay Peters, of Macomb, Ill., and Thomas (Toby) Peters of Dhaka, Bangladesh. She is also survived by one sister, Lydia Traube, of Tama and formerly of Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by Randall, her husband of 55 years, this past April. She also was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Harry Wilson, G. Edward Wilson, Eva (Mrs. Harry) Benge, Ilo Wilson, Mabel (Mrs. Russell) Johnson, Manning (Mike) Wilson and Clair Wilson.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight, with her family being present to greet friends and relatives, at Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown.

Memorials may be directed to Youth and Shelter Services of Marshalltown and Ames or to Israel Family Hospice Home in Ames.
