Maxine Charity, 91, of Ames, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 2, at Israel Family Hospice House. A public celebration of her life will be at a later date. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Maxine was born May 22, 1915, on a farm near Northville, S.D., to Charles B. and Minnie (Dull) Mair. The family moved to Redfield in 1922, then to Minneapolis in 1924. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1933 and completed her degree in institution management from the University of Minnesota in 1938. After college, she worked as a teacher and was on the home economics staff at the University of Minnesota. She loved her experiences with the Red Cross, serving during and after World War II from 1945-48. She managed service clubs in England, Germany and the Philippines.

She married Leon F. Charity June 12, 1953, at Colonial Church of Edina in Edina, Minn. After her husband completed his PhD in Ithaca, N.Y., they moved to Ames in 1955.

She was a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church, the Agricultural Engineering Women's Club, a 50-year member of Iowa State University Women's Club and its divisions, Gourmet II and Tea Room Adventures. She helped start the ISU chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and was actively involved for many years. She provided leadership support for Camp Fire Girls for multiple years, and volunteered at the Brunnier Museum store. She greatly enjoyed her extensive worldwide travels. She took aerobic exercise classes until age 89.

She is survived by one daughter, Candace M. Charity and her husband, Keith Whitaker, of Boise, Idaho; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Onalee Mair.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Dr. Leon F. and Maxine Charity scholarship fund through the ISU Foundation or Israel Family Hospice House.
