Sept. 25, 1977-July 22, 2006
Amos M. Nelson, 28, of Des Moines, died Saturday, July 22, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Des Moines. A military service was held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Madrid.

Amos M. Nelson was born Sept. 25, 1977, in Ames. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1996. He participated in football, wrestling and track and was presented with many medals and awards.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Grand View College in December 2000. His civilian career after college included Financial Services of Iowa and American Equity.

He joined the Army National Guard in 1995. He worked his way up through the ranks and was currently a captain. He became commander of the 186th Military Police Co. and served 14 months active duty, Operation Enduring Freedom, returning home in April 2004 with no casualties. Last fall, he took a full-time position at Camp Dodge in the USPFO Dept. Since March 2006, he was the commander/coordinator of the RSP Dept. He also was a general agent for Midland National.

He worked hard to finish a master of public administration degree and had graduated from Drake University in May 2006.

He married Mandy K. Burke of Madrid Oct. 15, 2005, in Ames.

He was a proud and active member of the American Legion Riders Chapter 7 and the American Legion Post 663 Urbandale.

He had a promising future. He was next in line for attending military flight school and had his sights set on acquiring a Ph.D.

Five years ago, he established a college fund for his son. He was so proud of Tyler and enjoyed being with him.

He was known for his ever present smile, willingness to help people, leadership skills, compassion, love for his family, being a brave soldier and talented officer, respect of the American flag and proudly serving his country, having a sense of humor, being a wonderful friend and always being one of a kind, which set him apart from everyone else.

He enjoyed watching movies and cable TV, listening to music, his laptop, being around friends and family and riding on his Harley.

He is survived by his wife, Mandy Nelson, of Des Moines; one son, Tyler Nelson, of Huxley; his mother and stepfather, Lorraine and Doyle Uitermark, of Stuart; his father and stepmother, Dave and Ann Nelson, of Gilbert; one sister, Tara Nelson, of Des Moines; one half-sister, Samantha Nelson, of Gilbert; one half-brother, Jacob Nelson, of Gilbert; one stepsister, Meggan Reynold,s of Minnesota; his grandparents, Daryl and Maxine Thomason, of Ames, and Iva Nelson, of Ames; and numerous friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Nels R. Nelson.

Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid was in charge of arrangements.
