THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

Anna Etzel Moede
June 5, 1904-June 8, 2006
Anna Etzel Moede, 102, died Thursday, June 8, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Anna Etzel Moede, who was born in Fort Dodge on June 5, 1904, left a legacy of public health service. In Manitowoc, Wis., she touched the lives of many families as director of the visiting nurse service and Shady Lane Home for the Aged. Upon completing about 25 years of contributing to the community, she retired to her family home in Fort Dodge.

After the death of her husband, the Rev. O. Fred Moede, a Congregational minister who had early-onset Parkinson's disease, she enlisted in VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). In Coffeyville, Kan., her assigned community, she provided public health nursing services to Head Start children and integrated the senior citizens center.

Upon returning to Fort Dodge, she resumed her activities, volunteering for RSVP, doing relief nursing for the Webster County Public Health Department and swimming every day at the YMCA. On Sunday afternoons, she could be seen biking to the outskirts of town.

In 1992, she moved to Ames and resided in Stone Haven Apartments, an independent living facility for seniors. She organized and led an exercise group for 14 years, arranged for library services and successfully petitioned the city council for sidewalks so seniors could walk and safely get to the bus stop. She also was a political activist, assisting with voter registration and absentee ballots.

Her final contribution was the gift of her body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for the purpose of advancing medical science.

She is survived by two children, John Moede of St. Paul, Minn., and Louise Lex of Ames; four grandchildren, Robin Moede of St. Paul, Gail Moede-Rogall of Madison, Wis., Andrea Lex of Maple Grove, Minn., and Louis John Lex of Bondurant; and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Alex Sudam.

Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
