March 31, 1916-June 12, 2006
James Wesley Freel, 90, of Ames, died of natural causes Monday, June 12, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. The body has been cremated and a graveside memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17, in Boone Memorial Gardens in Boone.

James Wesley Freel was born March 31, 1916, in rural Boone County to Scott and Bertha May (Deaton) Freel. He grew up in and attended school through the eighth grade in Napier before working on the family farm.

He served 4 1/2 years in the U.S. Army with the men of Battery B of the 494th anti-aircraft battalion of Alexandria, Minn. He married Illa Durby in 1947, and to this union, three children were born. He married Annabelle Gustafson in 1956. He was a member of Nazarene Church, American Legion Post 37 and the VFW Post 674.

He had been employed with Freel Sanitation and was a heavy equipment operator for Ray Cook Construction and the city of Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Annabelle Freel; two daughters, Judy Freel of Slater and Jean Williams of Marshall, Mo.; one son, Jim (Roxanne) Freel of Nevada; two stepsons, George Perkovich of Madrid and Frank (Jan) Perkovich of Boone; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Cordelia Anfenson of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Darrell and Walter; and one sister, Edith.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
