THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, May 16, 2006.
Randall "Randy" A. Higgins, 51, of Manhattan, Kan., died Friday, May 12. Memorial services were this morning at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan, Kan., with Fathers Matthew Cobb and Don Zimmerman officiating. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date.
Randall A. Higgins was born on June 2, 1954, in Greencastle, Ind., the son of Robert M. and Gloria (English) Higgins. He graduted from Danville High School in Indiana in 1972, and earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue University. He earned a masters degree and two doctorate degrees from Iowa State University. He married Mary L. Meck June 28, 1975. This union was blessed with four children: Stephanie, Keith, Ben and Michelle. The family moved to Manhattan, Kan., in 1982.
He was a professor of entomology at Kansas State University. He was a teacher, researcher and K-State research and extension specialist. He guided 16 students to graduate degree completion. He authored and delivered hundreds of public and professional education publications and presentations. He was a governing board member of the Entomological Society of America and received numerous awards for his professional service.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Manhattan, Kan.; two sons, Keith Higgins of Dana Point, Calif., and Ben Higgins of Manhattan, Kan.; two daughters, Stephanie (Higgins) Springer and her husband, Adam, of Manhattan, Kan., and Michelle Higgins of Manhattan, Kan.; his parents, Robert and Gloria Higgins of Danville, Ind.; two brothers, Kevin Higgins and his wife, Denise, of Plainfield, Ind., and Gary Higgins and his wife, Sunny, of Huntington Beach Calif.; one sister, Debbie (Higgins) Dillon and her husband, Dan, of Danville, Ind.; and many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Randy Higgins Memorial Fund, in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home at 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS, 66502. The memorial fund will benefit parks in Kansas.
