July 13, 1886 --- May 17, 1953
Your grandmother died at the Orange City Hospital in Sioux County on Sunday, May 17, 1953 from a stroke. She had been taken to the hospital the previous week according to her obituary in the Alton Democrat on May 21, 1953 (page 6).
An obituary in the Sioux County Capital on May 21, 1953 states that she died in Alton, but Orange City is probably correct.
Her obituary:
Mrs. H. Van Asselt Succumbs at Alton; Husband, 5 Children Survive Stroke Victim
Funeral services were held this week from the Alton Reformed Church for Mrs. Henry Van Asselt, who died Sunday, May 17, after suffering a stroke. Rev. E. Van Engelenhoven conducted the rites, and interment was made in Nassau township cemetery. Born in the Netherlands, July 3, 1886, Mrs. Van Asselt was Toontje Zandbergen before her marriage. She was married August 8, 1912, to Henry Van Asselt and the young couple came to this country in June, 1913. Seven children were born to them. Among the survivors are her husband, Henry Van Asselt; John Van Asselt of Irwin, La.; Gertrude (Mrs. Ernest) Loewen of Alton, Henry Van Asselt, Jr., of Ainsworth, Neb.; and Franklin and Francis of Alton. Two of the children, Anna (Mrs. C.) Huisman and an infant preceded Mrs. Van Asselt in death. A brother and a sister also survive in the Netherlands, and there are nine grandchildren living. Mrs. Van Asselt died at the age of 66 years, nine months and 17 days.
