Myron:
You are right, there aren't many records for that time period in the Pattersonville-Hull area. About the only reference to that family of Eric Thompson found was in the 1880 census. The family lived in Pattersonville, Sioux Iowa. He was born Norway about 1850, wife was Thorine age 26, Children Andrew 4, Andrew (possibly Randall) age 1 and Anna R. age 8 months. He was a shoemaker. They appeared to have come to the Hull area after immigrating in 1876 They were in the SD Territory in 1885, and according to the 1900 census at which time they were in Hanson County SD. So they weren't in Iowa that long.
In 1900 Erick Thompson born May 1850 Norway lived in Plano, Hanson Co. South Dakota, Married in the year 1873 in Norway. Wife Thorena was 47 Children were - Andrew 25, Randall 22, Anna R. 20, Edward 16, Henry 13; and living with them was Anna Loffswold 79 (Mother in law) Thorena's mother.
Erick died before 1910 census when Thorina was 56 living in Plano, Hanson, SD with Henry D. Thompson her son age 24.
In 1920 census of Fariview, Hanson Co. SD Thornia was 66 living with her daughter's family Emil Saugstad 31, wife Anna 39, and children. She was not found in the 1930 census so must have died before that date.
I also found a very informative obituary in the Alton Democrat of Oct 16, 1915 for Edmond A. Loffswold you mentioned was in the Hull area upon arrival of the Thompson family. You can see the obituary by going to http://siouxcounty.newspaperarchive.com and go to advanced search, put in 1915 on both sides of year boxes. Put Lofswold or loffswold in exact phrase. Mrs. E. Thompson attended his funeral
