Funeral services for Miss Mary Griffin were held at St. Mary’s church Saturday morning at 9:30 with Rev. Joseph Wolfe of Struble officiating, and burial was made at St. Mary’s cemetery. Miss Griffin was born in 1860 on a farm two and a half miles southwest of Maurice. She grew to womanhood in this community and taught in the rural school in Sioux County for several years. At the early age of 37 she suffered severe illness, which resulted in a mental weakness from which she never recovered. She had been cared for at the county farm at Orange City for a number of years and passed away there Tuesday, November 29, at the age of 78 years. She is survived by one brother, James Griffin of Chicago, Ill., and other relatives.

Those from out of town who came for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Daly of Yankton, S.D., Mrs. William O’Neal and Mrs. Guiam Bruno of Sioux City and Mrs. James Rogers and two daughters of LeMars.

Mary Griffin, elderly inmate of the county Home, died Tuesday evening. Funeral services are pending until officials determine the address of relatives, if any.

1880 census of Sioux county Mary Griffin, boarder age 20 teacher born Iowa parents born Ireland /Scotland, was living in Reading township.. near (Maurice). 1880 census of Sherman Township Sioux County Patrick Griffin 65 , Margaret 55, Henry 18, Nancy 15, James 11.

The 1885 Iowa census she was 24, born about 1861 at Clayton IA lived in Sherman Township Sioux County IA. Daughter of Margerett Griffin 60. Others siblings were William 29, Liesa 26, Henry 23, Nancy 20, James 16.

Her family most have left the area before 1895.
