James Doherty died at the residence of his son-in-law, James O'Mara, six miles north of Rock Valley, Wednesday evening, of pneumonia; he had been a resident of Rock Valley and vicinity for several years and was a veteran of the civil war. James Doherty, a pioneer of Sioux County passed to his eternal home Wednesday March 20, 1901, at the age of 77 years.. Mr. Doherty’s death was caused by pneumonia after an illness of about a week. Many of his friends were not aware of his illness until they heard the sad news of his death. Mr. Jas. Doherty was born in County Clare, Ireland, in 1824 and came to this country in 1849, residing for seven years in New York. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Daly and in 1866 moved to Dubuque where they made their home until 1889 when they came to Sioux County to live.
In August, 1862, Mr. Doherty enlisted in Co. E. 91st Iowa Volunteer Infantry and participated in several of the famous battles of the war. Owing to disabilities he was mustered out after one year’s service.
In 1891 his companion and helpmate of many years died, since which time he has resided with his daughter Mrs. Thomas O’Meara. Three sons and one daughter survive him John, James, William and Mrs. Thomas O’Meara.
The funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church Saturday morning at 10:00, Father Phelan performing the last sad rites. Jerry Rusk Post GAR, of which the deceased was a prominent member, attended in a body and assisted in the burial ceremony at the grave.
The family have the sincere sympathy of all in the hour of their sorrow.
(In 1880 he was living in Bloomfield Clinton IA, in 1895 he was living in Doon IA. Children John 1849-1924, Mary 1856, Mary 1859, William 1861-1928 and Patrick 1863-1894. According to the obit above several more sons.)
