Van Oort, Josephine (Mrs. Jean) 1929-2024

Mrs. Josephine Van Oort, age 95, of Englewood, Colorado, formerly of Matlock, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in Englewood.

There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, July 24, at 10:00am, at the Greenwood Cemetery near Matlock. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine was born on June 9, 1929, in Hospers, the daughter of Joe and Rena (De Boer) Boender. She was raised on a farm near Hospers, with three sisters and three brothers. She graduated from Newkirk High School in 1946 and attended Northwestern Junior College from 1946 to 1948. She then worked as a secretary to the registrar at Northwestern and took courses to get her diploma in 1951.

She was united in marriage to Jean Van Oort, on June 10, 1952. They made their home on a farm near Matlock until 1970, when the family moved to Denver, Colorado. Josephine worked at Iliff Preschool as a cook and at church as part of the Women’s guild. She also played the organ in church and loved to crochet and embroider.

In 2011, she suffered a stroke and moved to Porter Place Senior Living Facility until 2023, when the facility closed. She then became a resident of Brookdale Meridian Senior Living, along with several friends from Porter Place. She enjoyed playing Bingo, Scrabble, and visiting with friends.

Survivors include her five children, Norene, and her husband, Dave Buschbach; Rev. Harlan Van Oort, and his wife, Pat; Jolene, and her husband, Dean Linenberger; LuAnne, and her husband, Keith Vander Horst; and Jennifer Van Oort; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jean; a son, Philip Van Oort; a granddaughter, Hope; and her siblings, Henry Boender, Claude Boender, Rev. John Boender, Lucretia Boender, Adriana Boender, and Arlene Ver Hoek.
