Mr. Robert Schalekamp, age 75, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday, June 23, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. A prayer service will take place on Monday, June 24, at 9:30am, at the funeral home, followed by interment at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. There will be a memorial service on Monday, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating.

Robert Schalekamp was born on January 26, 1949, in Orange City, the son of Marion and Jennie (Van Gelder) Schalekamp. He was raised on a farm near Maurice and graduated from the MOC High School. He then attended Northwestern College for two years before being drafted into the United States Army in April of 1970. He served for almost two years and was honorably discharged in December of 1971.

He was united in marriage to Joanne Reinking on October 27, 1972, at the Maurice Reformed Church. They made their home in Orange City, where they raised their two daughters. Bob worked at Diamond Vogel Paint, in quality control, until 2013, when he retired. On October 9, 2023, he became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Mr. Schalekamp was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City and a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City and the Maurice Reformed Church. He enjoyed watching sports, fishing, going on bus trips, and attending his daughters’ events. Bob was also one of the first volunteers to start Bibles for Missions Thrift Store.

Survivors include his wife of more than 51 years, Joanne, of Orange City; two daughters, Wendi Schalekamp, and her significant other, Keith Van Houten, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Jackie Schalekamp, and her fiancé, Luke Richman, of Altoona; a brother and his wife, Douglas and Linda Schalekamp, of Sioux Falls; and Joanne’s siblings, Allen Reinking, of California; Mary, and her husband, Dennis De Zeeuw, of Sioux Center; Darrell and Janice Reinking, of Johnston; and Nan Reinking, of Orange City; along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, Amelia Reinking and Diane, and her husband, Jerry Munro; and a brother-in-law, Carl Reinking.

Memorials will be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
