Services for Anthony “Tony” Pape, age 85, of Sheldon who passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon. His funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. on Monday, November 20, 2023, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon with Father Siby Punnoose ~ officiating.

Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation with family present will be from 3 to 5 P.M. on Sunday, November 19, 2023, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5 P.M. at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Anthony (Tony) Joseph Pape was born on July 7, 1938 to Stephan and Anna (Muhlenkord) Pape in Sheldon, Iowa. When Tony was a young child, the family moved to Washington state where his father taught welding in the shipyards during World War II.

When the war ended, the family returned to Sheldon. Tony finished school and graduated from Sheldon High School with the class of 1956.

He met and married Marlene Stallmann. They married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers, Iowa, June 2, 1962. Together they raised six daughters.

Tony began his career in the grocery industry, serving as a meat cutter in all the Swanson’s stores. He was the meat manager in the New Ulm Swanson’s store for several years. When the Swanson’s chain was purchased by Hy Vee Food stores, Tony was promoted to the store director at the Sheldon location, a position he held until he moved to the Cherokee store in 1984. He retired from Hy Vee in 1993.

Tony enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, going for walks and visiting family and friends across the country. He was active in the Kiwanis and the Knights of Columbus in both the Sheldon and Cherokee communities.

Tony is survived by his wife, Marlene, and their daughters and their families; Laurie Pape Hadley, (Richard and Vivian Hadley) of St. Louis Park, MN, Pamela Pape-Lindstrom (Chris, Madison, and Julia Lindstrom) of Havre de Grace, MD, Melissa Pape (Brandon Robinson, Bailey, Sutton, and Chandler Privitt) of Houston, TX, Danette Pape Ramsey (Dewayne, Gabriel, and Alaina Ramsey) of Lyman, SC, Kari Pape Rosentrater (Kurt, Emma, and Alec Rosentrater) of Stratford, IA, and Nicole Pape of Des Moines, Iowa.

He is also survived by his siblings, Teresa McCarty of Albuquerque, NM, Rudy (Marian Pape) of Sioux City, IA, Mary Pape of Omaha, NE. He is survived by his in-laws, Patrick Kelleher, Sylvester Schmit, Joan Klein, John Stallmann, Joyce and Dennis Hollis, David and Connie Stallmann, Judy Stallmann, Karen Dagel-Whitham, Steve and Debbie Stallmann, Tom Stallmann, Brenda Stallmann, and Nick and Dianna Stallmann. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Anna Pape, his sisters Regina McCarty, Dolores Wunn, and Annette Kelleher, and his brother Lee Pape. His in-laws; Clarence and Catherine Stallmann, Frank McCarty, Duane Wunn, Esthermarie (Smitty) Pape, Germaine Schmitt, Norbert Klein, Mary Jane Stallmann and Gordon Schofer, Diane Stallman, Alice and Marvin Crayton, John Dagel, Jim Whitham, and Tom Bremmer as well as several nieces and nephews.
