Jacob W. Van Oort, 87, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at his home. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Christian Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

Jacob Winfield Van Oort was born on January 30, 1936, in Orange City, Iowa, the son of Peter and Sadie (Douma) Van Oort. He attended high school in Hull, Iowa. He furthered his education at Northwestern College in Orange City where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. On August 9, 1963, Jacob and Verna Kammann were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Jacob began teaching at Le Mars Community Schools in 1966. He taught middle school math until retiring in 1988.

Jacob was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars where he lectored for several years. In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling to see his children and attending sporting events with them. He also did some architectural drawing and created many area buildings and houses.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 60 years, Verna Van Oort of Le Mars, IA; his children, Kyle Van Oort of Tucson, AZ and Kari Van Oort of Shawnee, KS; along with nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Wileen Jane Van Oort; and a granddog, Buddy.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Organ Fund.
