Mrs. Joan Horstman, age 81, of Hull, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Sioux Center Health.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday, August 29, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull. A prayer service will take place on Wednesday, August 30, at 10:00am, at the church, followed by interment at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, at 11:00am, at the church with Pastor Keith Hoekstra officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of arrangements.

Joan was born on July 19, 1942, on a farm near Doon, the youngest of thirteen children born to Marinus and Hattie (Van Bemmel) Boon. She grew up in Rock Valley, where she was a student at the Rock Valley Christian School and Western Christian High School in Hull, graduating in 1960.

She was united in marriage to Virgil Dean Horstman on May 2, 1961, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. They first made their home in Sioux City, where Joan worked at Postal Finance until she and Virg moved to Hull in 1962. In addition to being a wife and mother, Joan also served as an EMT with the Hull Ambulance for several years. In 1982, she began working at The Foreign Candy Company in Hull and later at the Sioux Center Medical Clinic.

Joan was a member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull, where she had taught Sunday School. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a vocalist at numerous weddings. In her free time, Joan liked to read, do crochet and embroidery work, play card games, complete puzzles, and play the piano. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren’s many extra-curricular activities.

She is survived by her husband of more than 62 years, Virgil, of Hull; three children, Vicki, and her husband, Ron Jacobsma, of Blue Grass; Bruce Horstman, and his wife, Sheri, of Hull; and Laryl Horstman, of Hull; nine grandchildren, Aaron (Nicole) Jacobsma, Angela (Brian) Meinsma, Kimber (Mark) Sipma, Tyler Horstman, Amanda (Anthony) Jeffries, Elizabeth Waddell, Joe Warntjes, Jakob (Janaya) Horstman, Josie Horstman; nine greatgrandchildren, Oliver Jacobsma, Raelyn Meinsma, John, Justin, and Jessica Sipma, Otto Horstman, Kyra and Kora Waddell, and Jett Koenen; one sister, Hilda Vink; three sisters-in-law, Eileen Boon, Gertie Visser, and Ann Horstman; five brothers-in-law, Gene (June) Horstman, Del (Marla) Horstman, Nels (Gloria) Horstman, Gary Horstman, and Bob (Glenda) Horstman; and 78 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband’s parents, Gerrit and Angeline Horstman; six brothers, Martin Boon, Andrew (Johanna) Boon, Ben (Hermina) Boon, Elmer (Fanny Mae) Boon, Marv Boon, and John (Bev) Boon; five sisters, Mary (Herm) Steensma, Henrietta (Gerrit) Nibbelink, Gert (Gerald) Van Engen, Grace (Marinus) Van Hofwegen, and Martha (Bernie) De Jager; six brothers-in-law, Dale Vink, Marion (Agnes) Horstman, Gerald (Evie) Horstman, Irv Horstman, Keith Horstman, and Ed Visser; a sister-in-law, Florence Horstman; as well as two nieces and two nephews.

Memorials will be given to the Western Christian High School in Hull.
