From the Sioux County Capital, March 10, 1938:

Dr. J. Scholten is Dead

Dr. John Scholten of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and former Orange City man, died Tuesday of a blood disease. He had been sick for some time. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Scholten. For several years he worked in the Klay law office. He then went to the University of Iowa Dental school where he received his degree. He was 48 years old.

The funeral will be held at Cedar Rapids Thursday afternoon. His parents and a sister, Mrs. John Kroon of Sioux Center left Wednesday afternoon for Cedar Rapids to attend the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. L. Scholten had visited their son two weeks ago.

DR. JOHN SCHOLTEN

Dr. John Scholten, 48, secretary of the Iowa Dental association since 1927, died at his home, 1800 Higley avenue SE, Tuesday at 1 p.m. following an illness of six weeks duration. Dr. Scholten had practiced dentistry here since 1923.

Dr. Scholten was graduated from the Iowa university college of dentistry in 1914. He began practicing in Wilton Junction and remained there until he moved to Cedar Rapids. Dr. Scholten had offices in the Dows building.

Twenty-two years ago Dr. Scholten was married to the former Edith Anderson of Mankato, Minn. The couple had no children. In addition to his widow, Dr. Scholten is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lambertus Scholten, Orange City, Ia., and a brother and sister,

Dr. Scholten was a member of Mount Hermon lodge, Royal Arch Masons, the Cedar Rapids Dental society, and the American Dental association as well as the Iowa Dental association.

The body was taken to the Moen Funeral home and arrangements are pending.

Dr. Scholten’s Funeral Will Be Held Thursday

Funeral services for Dr. John Scholten, secretary of the Iowa Dental association who died at his home, 1800 Higley avenue SE, Tuesday at 1 p.m., will be held in the Moen chapel Thursday at 2 p.m. conducted by Dr. Robert Little and Mt. Herman Masonic lodge. The body will be cremated. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lambertus Scholten, he is survived by a brother, William, of Pender, Neb., and a sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Kroon, of Sioux Center.

Master Masons are requested to meet at Masonic hall at 1:30 p.m. Thursday to conduct the Masonic services for Dr. Scholten who was a member of Mount Herman lodge, No. 263, A. F. and A. M. and who also was a Royal Arch mason.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate (informant Lyman Jones, Cedar Rapids) adds his date of birth, March 2, 1890 in Orange City, Iowa; wife’s full name, Edythe Louise Scholten; parents, Lambertus Scholten, born in Holland, and Marie Louise Ida Schwarz, born in Germany; occupation, doctor dental surgery; died at 12:50 p.m. March 8, 1938; cause, periarteritis nodosa [an inflammatory blood vessel disease], onset 9/15/37. There was an autopsy. He was cremated (Moen Crematorium, March 10).

His FindaGrave.com page shows his ashes interred at Cedar Memorial Park, Cedar Rapids. There is a photo of the joint crypt plaque of him and wife Edythe L.

The Davenport, Iowa Quad-City Times, 1 Sept 1915 has their marriage announcement: Wilton, Ia., Sept. 1.--Yesterday evening was solemnized the marriage of Dr. John Scholten, a prominent young dentist of Wilton to Miss Edyth Anderson of Mankato, Minn., at the home of the bride’s parents. Dr. and Mrs. Scholten will arrive Saturday and will make their future home here. Dr. Scholten who has spent the past year here with Dr. F. B. James has made many friends who will extend heartiest congratulations.

Prior to his dental education, the 1910 U.S. census shows John, age 20, living at the family home in Orange City and working as a stenographer in a law office. In the 1920 census he has his own dental office in Wilton.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) shows him a resident of Wilton Junction, Iowa; a dentist, working for self and F. B. James; born March 2, 1890 in Orange City; married; previous military service as a private in the Hospital Corps, Iowa National Guard, for less than a year; tall, medium build, grey eyes, dark brown hair.
