From the Alton Democrat, August 15, 1941:

Mrs. James Hyink Pioneer Hospers Woman Passes

The people of the Hospers community were saddened to learn of the passing away of Mrs. James Hyink, one of the beloved town women, at her home on Wednesday evening, August 6th, around seven-thirty after a lingering illness of nearly a year.

Mrs. James Hyink, nee Adriantje Van Rooyen, was born on Oct. 26, 1875, at the old Van Rooyen homestead one mile south of Newkirk and was sixty-five years at the time of her death. She was one of ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rooyen. On October 3, 1894, she was united in marriage to James Hyink and they lived for 15 years on a farm north of Newkirk. In 1909 Mr. and Mrs. Hyink, with their son Walter, moved to Hospers to engage in business and the Hyinks have since resided in Hospers.

Mrs. Hyink was an active worker in both civic and church affairs. For many years she had been a member of the Classical Committee of the Women’s Board of Domestic Missions of the Reformed church and was President of the Woman’s Missionary Society at the time of her death. She also was President of the Young Ladies’ Mission Band from which she resigned six years ago. She had also been a Sunday school teacher for over thirty years. In 1917 she became township secretary of the Red Cross and served faithfully until 1937. She was also Chair-Woman of Floyd township on the Republican committee.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon with a short service at the home at 1 o’clock and at 1:30 in the First Reformed church where the deceased had been a member for two years. Rev. Doctor was assisted by Rev. M. A. Stegeman of Firth, Nebr., a former pastor of Mrs. Hyink’s. Interment was made at the family lot at Newkirk.

She leaves to mourn her departure from this life her husband, one son, Walter and his wife, two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. N. Balkema of Sioux Center and Mrs. Ben Hyink of Sheldon, five brothers, John, Henry and Jake Van Rooyen of Hospers, Hubert Van Rooyen of Sheldon, and Joe Van Rooyen of Sioux City, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Pall-bearers were nephews of the deceased, Dr. W. Balkema of Sheldon, S. Van Rooyen of Boyden, John B. Hyink of George, C. Balkema of Orange City, Walter Van Rooyen of Hospers and Walt Hyink of California.
