Langenhorst Rites Today at Hospers

The Hospers community was saddened by the death of a beloved citizen, Clem. W. Langenhorst, Monday morning at his home west of town. Death resulted from cancer.

Clemons W. Langenhorst was born Oct. 4, 1882, near Leunna, Clayton Co., Iowa, and came to the Hospers vicinity in 1894 with his parents. They made their home on a farm near town. April 19, 1904, he married Magdalene Hentges. Four children were born to the union: Lawrence, Theodore and Harold of Hospers, Olivia (Mrs. Peter Niichel) of Ashton.

Mr. Langenhorst was a devout member of St. Anthony’s parish and active in the civic and political affairs of the community. He served for many years as president of the local school board, an office he held at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 2nd at 8:00 A.M. at St. Anthony’s with Rev. J. Thoennissen in charge. Pallbearers were Gt. De Kruif, Martin Boersma, L. Draayon, Herman Schnurr, Oliver Ward and Dom. Jungers.

Surviving are his widow, three sons and one daughter, his mother, Mrs. L. Langenhorst, two sisters: Mrs. J. W. Jungers of Hospers, Mrs. Joe Clauseman, Long Prairie, Minn., 3 half sisters, Mrs. Louise Clauseman of Spooner, Wis., Mrs. Ida Ricker, Hope, N. D., and Mrs. Joe Heying of Chicago. The family has the heartfelt sympathy of the community.

FindaGrave.com has Clemens W. Langenhorst, born 4 Oct 1882 at Luana, Clayton County, Iowa, died Sept 1941 in Hospers, buried in Saint Anthonys Cemetery, Hospers. A photo of the joint headstone of him and wife Magdalena (1882-1962) confirms the spelling of his forename as Clemens. One child is listed: Olivia R. Langenhorst Niichel (1914-1997). There is also a photo of him on what looks like a carte de visite: “C. W. Langenhorst. Floyd. Breeder of Red Polled Cattle. Born in Clayton Co., Iowa 1882.”

His death certificate has Clems Wm Langenhorst (indexed on Ancestry.com as Wangenhorst); gives his parents as Laurence Langenhorst and Marie Loweise Thye, both born in Germany; died in Hospers, where he had been a resident 46 years, at 6 a.m. Sept. 27, 1941; cause, cancer of urinary bladder, duration 6 months.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1904 has groom Clemens W. Langenhorst, age 22, resident of Sioux County, a farmer, born in Clayton County, parents Lorenz [Langenhorst] and Maria Louisa Phy; bride Magdalena Hentges, age 22, resident of Sioux County, born in Sioux County, parents Theodore [Hentges] and Anna Maria Krumer; married in Hospers April 19, 1904.

His World War I draft registration card shows him as Clemens William Langenhorst, resident of Hospers, farming for himself; tall, medium build, blue eyes, blond hair.

The 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses show him as a farmer.
