De Jager, Sharla "Chuck" (Mrs. Paul Dean) 1932-2022

Mrs. Sharla De Jager, age 90, of Orange City, formerly of Maurice, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, November 25, from 10:00am to 11:00am, at the Maurice Reformed Church. There will be a funeral service on Friday, at 11:30am, at the church with the Rev. Jeremy Van Genderen and the Rev. Wick Hubers officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Sharla Ann was born in Orange City on January 6, 1932, one of seven children born to Gerrit and Henrietta (Van Marel) Riphagen. She grew up in Orange City and Maurice and attended the Orange City Public School.

She was united in marriage to Paul Dean De Jager on February 3, 1950, at her parents’ home in Maurice. Paul and “Chuck” settled on the De Jager family farm near Maurice, where in addition to helping Paul on the farm, she was a homemaker to their five children. After more than 64 years of marriage, Paul passed away on October 6, 2014, at their home. In December of 2016, after spending a couple months at Plymouth Manor in Le Mars, Sharla moved to Orange City, where she became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community and later the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Mrs. De Jager was a life-long member of the Maurice Reformed Church, where in earlier years she participated in the Women’s Guild and sang in the church choir. She was also a twenty-year member of Sweet Adelines International, an organization of women singers. She enjoyed listening to her favorite hymns, singing, embroidering, cross stitching, and going to family gatherings.

Survivors include her five children and their spouses, Keith and Mary De Jager, of Yankton, South Dakota, and their two children, Tanya (Rick) Roberts and Heath (Heidi) De Jager; Allen and Eileen De Jager, of Ireton, and their four children, Matthew (Joy) De Jager, Michael (Karissa) De Jager, Chad (Kim) De Jager, and Anne (Ryan) Roetman; Harv and Nancy De Jager, of Maurice, and their four children, Jennifer (Greg) Leusink, Jessica (Dan) David, Ashley (Adam) Maassen, and Kaitlyn (Dan) Vander Schaaf; Rick and Carolyn De Jager, of Branson, Missouri, and their six children, Steve (Lana) De Jager, Jon (Susie) De Jager, Miranda Leusink, Lacey De Jager, Bo (Ashton) De Jager, and Blake De Jager; and Paula and Bob Rosener, of Vail, Iowa, and their three children, Collin (Alicia) Vande Hoef, Clint Vande Hoef, and Lexie Vande Hoef; 44 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson-in-law, B. Jay Leusink; three brothers, Vernon (Helen) Riphagen, Merlin (Elaine) Riphagen, and Kenneth Riphagen in infancy; three sisters, Baulah (Clarence) Harms, Arloa (David) Vande Brake, and Fay Masters; and two sisters-in-law, Esther (Ray and his second wife Doris) Johnson and Leona (Pete) Van Maasdam.

Memorials will be given to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
