Mrs. Eveleen Van Peursem, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday, May 1, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Monday, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice with the Rev. Wick Hubers officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Eveleen Bernice was born on January 25, 1932, in Orange City, the daughter of Bert and Jennie (Hibma) Tigchelaar. She was raised in Maurice, where she graduated from the Maurice High School and worked at Heusinkveld Mercantile.

She was united in marriage to Russell Duane Van Peursem on March 4, 1952, at the First Reformed Church parsonage in Maurice. They made their home on a farm near Orange City before moving to a farm near Maurice in 1961. In 1980, they moved to Orange City, where she worked for nine years at Harkers and fifteen years in the dietary department of the Orange City Hospital. Eveleen moved into the Prairie Ridge Care Center in September of 2021.

Mrs. Van Peursem was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Maurice. In her younger years, she enjoyed singing in the Farm Bureau Choir, and later, she and Russ enjoyed wintering in Mission, Texas for twelve years and then in California. There was no travel adventure too big or too small for her. Until the fall of 2021, she always made sure her sons had full noon meals when planting and harvesting. She also loved babysitting her grandchildren and visits from her great-grandchildren, participating in the Red Hat Society, playing cards, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, and reading. Eveleen was America’s biggest fan of the classic British television comedy “As Time Goes By”, a Saturday evening ritual.

Survivors include her husband of more than 70 years, Russ, of Orange City; three children, Denise Van Peursem, of Orange City; Marc and Nora Van Peursem, of Alton; and Jon and Carol Van Peursem, of Maurice; three grandchildren, Alyssa, and her husband, Andrew Peters; Preston Van Peursem, and his wife, Heidi; and Sara Van Peursem, all of Orange City; and three great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Leo Peters, and Jackson Van Peursem.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Joy Van Peursem, at the age of six; a daughter-in-law, Deborah K. Van Peursem; and a sister and her husband, Sadie and Arend Westhuis.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
