Mr. John Gelderman Passed Away Wednesday Morning

John Gelderman, who has been ill for some time and confined to his bed for several months, died early on Wednesday morning at his home here in Hull at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 5 days.

Mr. Gelderman came to Hull eight years ago and married Mrs. Beekhuis, who with three sons and three daughters by his first wife survive.

The funeral will be held here on Friday morning, October 6th, at 9:30 from the Protestant Reformed Church and the remains will be taken to Colton, South Dakota where burial will be made. Services will also be held at the Christian Reformed Church at Colton at 3:00 in the afternoon. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate (informant William Gelderman) has John Gelderman, wife Trintje Gelderman, resident of Hull for 8 years; born January 27, 1868 in Holland, parents William Gelderman and Cenia Gelderman; occupation, laborer; died at 4:45 a.m. October 2, 1940; under a doctor’s care since Sept. 27 [presumably when he had his stroke]; cause, cerebral hemorrhage; due to hypertension and arterio sclerosis.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him buried in Colton Cemetery, Colton, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, and includes a photo of his headstone with birth and death dates. Spouse, Mary Gelderman (1872-1917). One child listed: John Gelderman (1897-1975).

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index entry record for Jan Meeuwes Gelderman, born 27 Jan 1868 in Meppel, Drenthe; parents Willem Gelderman, age 27, a laborer, and Meeuwsina Luten.

In September 1920 he applied for a passport to go to Holland to visit relatives. He is a resident of Minnehaha County, South Dakota; born January 27, 1868 at Meppel, Holland; father William Gelderman still resides there; he immigrated to the U.S. about June 15, 1885 and has resided for 35 years in Inwood, Iowa and Colton, S.D.; he is currently living in Colton, occupation farmer; he was naturalized before the Sioux County district court on Sept. 10, 1890. Description: age 32[i.e., 52], height 5 feet 4½ inches, high forehead, medium mouth, round chin, straight nose, oval face, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes. A photo of him is included. The 1930 U.S. census shows him (age 62) living in Hull with wife Trijntje (age 56), no occupation. He immigrated from the Netherlands in 1890, she in 1888; both are naturalized. In 1940 they are still living in Hull.

The district court had appointed a guardian of the property of John and Tryntje Gelderman in July 1939 (Sioux County Index, July 14, 1939).
